HP48 Gii memory issues
The HP48Gii Calculator has 128kB memory, but only about 80k is available to
the user.
Quickclose version 2.12 will leave only about 6k free after a new install,
just enough for 100 cogo points. However, Job overhead means you'll need to
clean up regularly to keep the 6k available to you. Loose pointers, unused
variables and objects will reduce the available memory till you get a '
insufficient memory ' error message. To clean up:
- Press ON and C key simultaneous - this
will trigger a warm boot which will clean up the memory. The warm boot does
not affect the program in memory. Or:
- Issuing the MEM command - to see how much memory is left - will do
the same.
You can also see the available memory by pressing the FILES button (Left
Shift G ).
Note that a reset using the A + F + ON key or paperclip in the
reset hole in the back of the calculator WILL erase the memory contents
entirely. You'll need to re-load your programs if you use this method.

How to format the SD
memory card (HP49G+, HP50g only)
- Using HP49g+ calculator:
** warning** - if you format your SD card in ROM version 50, it will format
it to FAT32 - which File Manager of this version can't read and you'll have
to update to the latest ROM version (see below) in order to access your SD
card.
The simplest way to format the SD Card is using your HP49g+ calculator.
- access the system menu by pressing the keys ON and D (F4 key) together and
then release “D” key.
- Press the 9 key to select “9.FORMAT”. if required, choose the size/capacity of your SD Card. You can select
from 8 MB up to 128 MB according the size of your SD card. If the card is not
already inserted, you will be now asked to insert the SD Card. Insert the card
contacts side up, till it is flush with the housing. Hit the ENTER key to start the
formatting. When the formatting is completed, you will see a message confirming
this “FORMAT FINISHED. PRESS ANY KEY EXIT”.
- Using PC with SD slot or PCMCIA/SD adapter:
Select the ‘Start’ menu button on your desktop. Select the item ‘Run’. In the
pop-up box type in the command ‘FORMAT’. (For help on this command, use ‘FORMAT
/?’) . To start the formatting of the SD card, please enter following observing
the syntax accurately: %Drive% /FS:FAT /V:HP49GSD /A:8192 where %Drive% means
letter of drive SD card – e.g. G: The SD Card will be formatted.
Using handheld device with SD slot:
You may have to install an application, which supports the formatting of the SD
card. For example, the “Pocket Mechanic” or some similar application that is
available. Then run this application on your handheld and format the SD card.
Programming compatibility
The HP 48Gii and HP 49G+ are evolutions of the earlier models. The
programming is essentially the same, and most user-code programs are
compatible.
However, there are some variations that may cause the programs
to behave differently. Also, programs that use system addresses will not
work because the system addresses in the newer models are different.
The HP50g is pretty much identical to the HP49G+ when later ROM versions are
loaded.
Programs developed for the HP 32S can be entered into, and run on, the HP 33S
with minimal or no change.
ROM upgrade (HP49G+, HP50g)
The operating system of the HP49G+ and HP50g is upgradeable, so you can keep the
calculator up-to-date
To find out what version you have on your calculator, turn it on, then press and
hold ON , press and release the F4 key, release ON
key. Both Version and Build number will be briefly displayed. To
return to normal mode, press ON and the F3 key for a
warm reset.

and supposedly the type-ahead speed is now user settable too
HP50g : connectivity
software v 2.3 problem
On some PC's the connectivity software supplied on CD with the HP50g does not
install/ work properly.
When launching the software,
error messages like 'Access violation' read memory 000000004
etc. occur.
The workaround is to set Regional Settings to USA and then launch
the software.
The solution is to download version 2.3/ build 2438 (sept 2006, 4.3 Mb)
